Inner Excellence

I read about this in a newsletter email that I received and thought it was pretty good – so I am sharing it with you.

A lot more people are trying to discover their inner excellence. That’s because on Sunday, Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver A.J. Brown was seen on camera flipping through the book Inner Excellence on the sidelines of the team’s playoff game, and instantly went viral. By yesterday morning, Inner Excellence, written by performance coach Jim Murphy, shot up to No. 1 on the Amazon bestsellers list.

Brown has a heavily marked-up copy he brings to every game, and says the book brings him a “sense of peace.” Here’s one highlighted passage that may help you achieve your inner excellence today:

“In the pursuit of extraordinary performance, it’s easy to succumb to anxiety and pressure, because so much is out of your control. When you learn to live a life that is fully engaged, however, then you can perform your best and love the challenge. Every performance, presentation, or problem you face is an opportunity to learn and grow and vividly experience each moment.

  1. I love that quote, Paul! And you can’t know how timely that is, because I was just fretting about something I now see as an adventure. The name & author of the book I am thinking about that inspired me completely escapes me. But the part that helped me was a series of prompts that help you drill down to what I think he called your inner genius.

  2. Thanks Paul – what a lovely way to express what spiritual teachers invite – be present, be here now!

My 13 year old grandson reluctantly signed up for Cross country track again last fall – and after an early session, told his mom, ‘ i remember what i like about running – i can’t worry about something else while I’m doing it!!’

    1. What a beautiful expression from your grandson. I think we sometimes (well, me!) try to multitask and get lost in not being present in the moment! From the mouth of babes. 🙂

  3. It is certainly beneficial to be at peace with yourself so that you can channel your own resources. I also find it helpful to be well prepared, which applies to all possible areas of life.
    Are you a Phillies fan?

    1. It is usually ALWAYS a good idea to be prepared, I think!

I am not a Phillies fan, Tamara. Are you? If so, what do you enjoy about them? (Honestly, I have not followed baseball in years – although people refer to the Eagles (football) as Phillies… And probably in your case, you may be referring to the Flyers – no I have no idea who you are talking about – LOL.).

  4. I love this! Seeing how “Inner Excellence” brings A.J. Brown a sense of peace is so inspiring, especially with that powerful quote about staying fully engaged in life’s challenges. It reminds me of how “The Art of Not Giving a F$%k” has helped me refocus on what truly matters over the past few years. It’s amazing how books can shift our mindset like that.

    1. Sometimes it is just one little nugget in a book, an article, or even a movie, that can make a life changing alteration! Do you recommend, “The Art of Not Giving a F$%k,” Jasmine?
